Will Mumbai Indians Become The Best Cricket Team In India?
In terms of titles, The Mumbai Indians cricket team are currently the most successful franchise in the Indian Premier League, having won the tournament on no fewer than four occasions, one more than their rivals Chennai Super Kings, but do the reigning indian cricket champions have what it takes to dominate for the next decade?
IPL Title Wins
Odd years have been good to the Mumbai Indians in recent times because they have been crowned winners of the Indian Premier League in the last four, including last season when they saw off the Chennai Super Kings cricketers in an epic final, prevailing by a single run in one of the most memorable climaxes to an Indian Premier League campaign.
Their first IPL title came in 2013, when the Super Kings were also their victims. Their experienced overseas players came good at the right time to seal a 23 run win in the final. The Indians won by an even greater margin in 2015, defeating the same opponents by 41 runs when Lendl Simmons and captain Rohit Sharma stole the show. The Rising Pune Supergiants were the victims the third time Mumbai won the IPL cricket title, in 2017, when much like in 2019, the Indians prevailed by a solitary run.
Mumbai Indians Best Players
There has always been a huge core of good Indian cricket players at the Mumbai Indians, which has often been part of their success. That remains the case today with India’s Rohit Sharma as their captain and arguably their most important player. Jasprit Bumrah has been a massive part of the success the side have had while all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya’s impact should not be underplayed. Harbhajan Singh has previously been a key member of the cricket squad.
The other strength of the Mumbai Indians has been the calibre of overseas cricketers they have attracted in the past, and continue to employ. Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard and Lasith Malinga remain of the top class while previously players such as Mitchell Johnson, Sanath Jayasuriya, Glenn Maxwell and Jacob Oram have all been key players.
Mumbai Indians Future
That brings us to the question about whether the Mumbai Indians can continue to dominate the indian cricket panorama. That answer is yes they can and that is the case for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, they are so well managed that they have a strong core of young Indian cricketers who have plenty more seasons left in them to thrive for Mumbai Indians. Players such as Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan all have years in them and the production line in Mumbai will continue to churn out cricket star talents.
The other reason why we should expect further cricket domination from the Mumbai outfit is that historically their biggest rivals, Chennai Super Kings, are an ageing side who are going to have to go through an inevitable transition period soon. There are emerging cricket teams such as the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals who will be hoping to challenge but they both need to add depth to their Indian core of players if they are to stop Mumbai Indians from dominating.
There are world-class cricketers everywhere you look at the Wankhede Stadium, and they are set to keep the Mumbai Indians as the cricket team to beat in IPL seasons to come.
